Building Management Systems

Stork Operon provides BMS System to all Life Spaces, be it Residential, Commercial or Industrial complexes. Integrated Building Management System is an integrated solution package that includes the following subsystems:

. Building Automation System including integration with plant subsystems such as chiller controls

. Security System including alarm monitoring, card access, CCTV and intercom

. Fire Alarm System including fire detection system, fireman telephone and voice evacuation system.

The Building Automation System, Security System and Fire Alarm system are completely integrated. They share a common database, a common user interface.

There has been a steady evolution in the technology guiding the BMS over the past five years. Stork Operon has been keeping in step with the changing trends in the area of Building Management Controls. The first facet of evolution concerned as to how the sub-systems are integrated. Open System Architecture (Interoperability) has been discussed at length over the past five years.

ASHRAE, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers has published BACnetÃ’ in 1995. It was in 1991 that Echelon introduced their Lon WorksTM Networked Control Technology. Both these are now recognised world over as two alternate standards for network communication protocols.Stork Operon is perhaps the only company that is able to offer BMS Systems conforming to both these standards.

We have been using LonWorks for over five years, when we first commissioned the SCADA System using this technology at Bombay Dyeing Mills for automating the Air Compressors. We have associated with IEC Intelligent Technologies, USA whose network tools were used in our first Job at the above mills for Bacnet solutions. IEC have offered both TCP/IP and BACnet interfaces and supporting network software tools, with LonWorks System at the Control Level.

Stork Operon thus has unique offering in the BMS BACnet is a data communication protocol for building automation and control networks. Developed under the auspices of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), BACnet is now an American national standard, a European pre-standard, and a potential global standard. The protocol is supported and maintained by ASHRAE Standing Standard Project Committee 135. LONWORKSTM is a networking control platform and is a complete solution to control applications.

A networked control system is significantly more powerful, flexible and scaleable than a non-networked control system. It is developed by Echelon Corporation, USA in 1991 and more than 4000 vendors have since adopted it. Stork Operon is the first in India to have adopted this Technology.

LonWorks provides an Information-based Control System rather than the conventional (old style) Command-based Control System. This means that in Lonworks system, each node application program makes its own control decision based on the information it collects from other devices. The control logic is 'spread' across the network. Thus there are no centralised controllers and no home-run wiring.

LonTalk protocol implements all seven layers of OSI model of ISO Standard, and does so using a mixture of hardware and firmware on silicon chip, thus precluding any possibility of accidental or intentional modifications. It is very reliable. ANSI granted this protocol status as an official standard, ANSI/EIA 709.1-A-1999 dated October 1999 The second major trend is the Componentisation of BAS.

The advent of VAV Boxes in Indian HVAC scene is an example of this. The modern VAV boxes come with self contained Control System including instrumentation. This trend is likely to grow in the next couple of years. The BACnet and LonWorks Protocols are allowing the integration of application-specific component control system to be included in building-wide strategies. Here again Stork Operon will be in-step (if not ahead of the trends) with the technological changes in HVAC/BAS since it has the wherewithal to provide solutions employing both BACnet and LonWorks.
